ENGAGE
DECEMBER 2021

Dr. John Kershaw

President, SICI

President's Message

As our Canadian members prepare for the end of fall term and upcoming Christmas break, I hope we all can look forward to the New Year. Twenty twenty-one has been another year profoundly impacted by COVID. Once again many of SICI’s programmes and activities were placed on hold due to international travel restrictions; however, many new virtual programmes continued to keep us engaged. The India office organized a number of virtual webinars over the year that were very well attended. I hope we can continue to host webinars this coming year, and into the future, because these webinars provide an opportunity to engage a wider cross-section of our members. That said, it is encouraging to hear of many members’ plans for mobility in 2022. I know I personally look forward to re-establishing the personal connections.

The Fall has been busy for both offices. The India office has continued their outreach to members and Indian State governments. The Canadian Office has been revitalized and are busy reaching out to Canadian members and Canadian Provinces. The Canadian Office hosted Mr. Manish Gupta, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Vancouver recently. It was my pleasure to join that event virtually along with the other Canadian Executive Council members. It was also a pleasure to host Ms. Apoorva Srivastava, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Toronto, and His Excellency Ajay Bisaria, High Commissioner of India to Canada at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) along with a delegation of NASSCOM business executives. Another fall highlight was the signing of the MOU between SICI and the Province of Saskatchewan, renewing the close commitment to bilateral collaboration that SICI has long shared with the Province of Saskatchewan. The virtual signing event was very well attended by both Canadian and Indian Council Members. Similar initiatives with Alberta, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia are in progress. We will be looking to all council members to help us in engaging State and Provincial governments in the coming year.

I look to 2022 as another positive year for SICI. Our industrial outreach committees will be formalized and activated, and our new member engagement “Mapping and Matching” events will start. Please be sure to encourage participation in these events by faculty from your institutions. I hope to be able to personally visit some of our Canadian members and look forward to a trip to India sometime before the end of my term as President. Take care, keep healthy, and look forward to the opportunities the New Year brings.

Thank you!
